September CAS Mix Up Challenge - Stenciling with Gesso

Hi everyone.  Welcome to the start of the September CAS Mix Up Challenge.  This month is hosted by the talented Hilary (fiddling about).  She would like us to use Gesso through a Stencil for our CAS cards this month.
I started by watching this video.  I rarely use Gesso and I'm always stumped about what it is for. :)  This video really helped me see that one of the great properties of white Gesso is to use it as a base for adding colour over top of coloured card stock.  It can be used for other things, but I have never tried this before so wanted to check it out.  It works great!

I used a dark blue card stock (sorry, not sure of the colour).  I added my Leafy stencil (Gentle Leaves Slimline - The Crafter's Workshop) over top and using a sponge dauber, dapped on a light coating of gesso through the stencil.  I removed the stencil and washed it right away ... gesso is not very easy to clean up if it dries.  I then left the stenciled gesso piece to dry completely.

I placed my stencil back over top and sponged the leaves and stem using two colours of acrylic paint, using sponge daubers.  I stamped a sentiment (Garden Greetings - Simon Says Stamp) in matching white pigment ink before heat embossing with white embossing powder.  To finish, I used my white Posca pen to outline the leaves and stems before mounting my card front onto my card base.

Close-up ...

We are excited to have Sue (Cards by Q) as our Guest Designer this month.  Welcome Sue!  I hope you'll check out the challenge blog to see the fabulous gesso-stenciled cards from our Guest Designer and Design Team.  Pull out your Gesso and stencils and come join us!  Hope to see you in the gallery.

Edited to add:  I'm sending this to the Color Hues Challenge #48 (Navy & Lime) where they are celebrating their 2nd birthday!  Congrats to the team!
... and I'm sending this Navy and Lime Birthday card to Seize the Birthday #246 - Collaboration with Color Hues! :)
Thanks to my sweet friend, Marcia for letting me know about the challenges!

What pretty leaves, Loll - thanks for the video link too! I enjoyed that video and another one that came afterward (different topic...). Thanks for the inspiration for CAS Mix-up; maybe I'll get over there this month.

Well now, there's a good idea for using gesso. I've never used it but have been curious. Love these leaves and the card base is a very rich blue to go with them. There's always something new to try!

AWESOME card Loll! I just knocked my bottle of gesso down the other day reaching for something else...do you think it was a sign I needed to get it out and use it?! Haha!! Anyway, your card is just lovely and the bright green shows up so beautifully against the navy...LOVE it! You should enter this card in the color hues challenge...navy & lime green. Hugs. :0)

This is a really strong look with the navy base card and the gessoed leaves with the added lime green...so zesty and pretty Loll, and I love the way you have defined the edges of the leaves with a white Posca pen and finished with a coordinating white sentiment. x

Lovely card Loll. I've had a little pot of Gesso for ages but rarely use it.... I'll have to check to see it has dried up. xx

Thanks for sharing another great way of using gesso, Loll! I never thought of the use. The light green leaves look so fresh on the dark blue card base, especially with the white outlines! Such a beautiful CAS birthday card!

Sorry to be so late visiting this month. I am now back from my trip and trying to catch up. I love how you have achieved such clean colour by using the white gesso over the blue cardstock and am intrigued to see you used acrylic pain. very good idea and it has worked a treat. I love it xx

It's been a long time since I pulled out my Gesso. Need to give this challenge a try. Your card is just lovely and a great addition to out gallery in Color Hues! Thanks for sharing!

Must admit I thought gesso was just for priming canvases so this is a new one for me, it works really well though on that lush blue background. Thanks for joining in at Color Hues too. :)

The effect of the colour on the gesso against that gorgeous blue backdrop is simply stunning. Like you I was at a bit of a loss as to the possibilities of using gesso! I know more now!

The green pops against that gorgeous blue Loll, never thought of stencilling with gesso, sounds like a fun technique, Cathy x (thankyou for playing along at Seize the Birthday too).
