Guest Designing for the Flower Challenge

Hi everyone.  I'm thrilled to be among a group of Guest Designers honouring Aileen and Viv from The Flower Challenge #85 - Anything Flowers Goes.  These two amazing ladies have run The Flower Challenge for seven years and we are here today to help them celebrate the 7th birthday of the challenge and to also say a fond farewell.  Both are stepping down at the end of this challenge.  Thank you Aileen and Viv for your wonderful commitment and work to run a successful challenge all these years!!

This is not the end of The Flower Challenge as Karren will be running it starting next month.  Way to go Karren!!

I wanted to create a card for both Aileen and Viv, inspired by their beautiful styles and colours they love.  Today I'm sharing the card I made to honour Aileen.  The card honouring Viv will be posted as a reminder on Oct. 15 ... I hope you'll come back to see it then!

Aileen likes to use blue for flowers and bold designs, so I hope she likes this card. :).  

The flowers and sentiment (Statement Flowers by Altenew) are heat embossed in silver onto mixed media paper.  I watercoloured the image using Distress Inks (Salvaged Patina, Peacock Feathers, Mowed Lawn, Peeled Paint, and Squeezed Lemonade).  I added a simple strip of washi tape on the side to finish the design. :)

CAS Mix Up October Challenge

Hi everyone.  It's the start of the CAS Mix Up October Challenge.  This month is hosted by the talented Bonnie (Stamping with Klass).  She wants us to incorporate plant material in our cards ...

I have to admit that I made this print a long time ago.  We did a lot of botanical prints during our last Crafting Retreat.  The process was fairly simple.  Forge outside for leaves and flowers.  Place them single layer on a piece of watercolour paper, then place another piece of watercolour paper over top.  Run through the Big Shot.  Let it dry before separating the two pieces.  You end up with two botanical prints. :)

I love the purple and green leaves together.  I layered them over top of a strip of burlap and then placed it on a woodgrain embossed background (gift from a friend).  The sentiment (Lace Leaf - Altenew - retired) is stamped in Archival Shadow Grey (Ranger).

The Flower Challenge #53

Hi everyone.  It's the start of the new challenge at The Flower Challenge #53.

This is a new-to-me stamp (Statement Flowers - Simon Says Stamp) that I watercoloured with distress inks on mixed media paper.  I first added some stenciled dots (Mini Tiny Circles Stencil - TCW) to the background before stamping and colouring the flowers.  I do love the large size of these flowers --- were fun to watercolour.  To finish, I added a shadow around the flowers using a dark gray Zig brush marker.  Both the flowers and sentiment (Many Everyday Messages - Hero Arts) are stamped in black and heat embossed in clear.

Happy Mother's Day

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a Mother's Day card I made using a Layered Stencil that I've had for a long time but never used. :)  I do have a LOT of those in my studio! :)  Entering this card into NBUS #14 (never-before-used-schtuff).

I sponged two colours of distress inks for both the flower and leaves.  I removed the stencil and decided that I wanted more of a watercolour look, so pulled out my paint brushes and got to work.  Stamped with a beautiful sentiment from Penny Black to finish the card.

I will miss seeing my Mom on Mother's Day.  Believe this is the first time I won't be seeing her on her special day.

More Vellum Watercolouring

Hi everyone.  Another card to share with watercolouring on vellum.  I've had fun playing with this month's CAS Watercolour Challenge!

I was recently away for a few days, relaxing in a cabin on Galiano Island, overlooking Active Pass.  I have mentioned many times before on my blog, it's a favourite place for hubby and I to get away.  While I was there, I had some time to watercolour lots of images with my zigs.  The flower used today was one of those.

I previously made a smooshed background with yellow, green and blue inks ... can't remember what I used, but most likely Distress inks (my fav!).  I wanted to add something different to the look of the vellum, so I dry embossed with a delicate leafy design and used a flat sponge and silver Inka Gold to just catch the tops of the embossing to add highlights to my background.  I framed a small piece with a square stitched die and then added the fussy-cut flower that I mentioned above.  The card front is popped up from the background with a silver stamped sentiment.  I popped up the flower as well to add lots of dimension.  Added the flower to the corner of the square.

Rubber Band Technique cards from Video

In the video, I showed several different cards that I made with this fun and easy technique.  In this post, I'm sharing the details of how I made the cards and the products I used.

Happy Birthday Flowers card:

Wrapped two elastic (rubber) bands around my acrylic block.  Pressed the block into my Versamark pad and lightly stamped onto my mixed media card front.  Trick is to press lightly enough to transfer the ink from the elastic bands, without transferring any residual ink that sits on the block.  Sprinkled with white embossing powder and heat set.  Sponged green and blue inks randomly over the heat embossed area.

Die-cut the blooms from watercolour paper and used distress inks to watercolour.  Die-cue the window from the card front and place on top to align the blooms.  Attached blooms to the back of the window card front and popped it up over the background.  This gives some space between the flowers and the background.  Stamped the sentiment in Peacock Feathers to match.

Forever Grateful card:
Wrapped two elastic (rubber) bands around my acrylic block.  Pressed the block into my Versamark pad and lightly stamped onto my mixed media card front.  Trick is to press lightly enough to transfer the ink from the elastic bands, without transferring any residual ink that sits on the block.  Sprinkled with white embossing powder and heat set.  Sponged green and blue inks randomly over the heat embossed area.  Spritzed with a little water and used a water brush to move the colours around.  Made sure the card front was dry before adding the black die-cut leaves and white heat embossed black sentiment banner.

Happy Birthday Leaf card:
Wrapped two elastic bands around the barrel of a brayer and snapped it into the handle.  Rolled the brayer across a Versamark pad several times to make sure the ink was on the elastic bands all around the roller.  Rolled the brayer in one direction across a piece of mixed media.  Reloaded the brayer and continued to roll across the paper until the whole sheet was inked (one direction only).  Sprinkled with silver embossing powder and heat set.

Pressed some green and blue inks onto my craft mat, spritzed with water and "splashed" the embossed card, using the Splash Watercolour Technique, click on link to see video tutorial.  Let dry and die-cut the leaf.

Adhered the leaf to my black card base, popping up the top leaves and gluing the bottom of the stem and two bottom leaves flat onto the card.  Stamped the sentiment and heat embossed in silver.

Hello Framed Fern card:
Wrapped two elastic bands around my brayer and loaded with Versamark ink.  Lightly rolled over my Mixed Media card stock in one direction, re-inking after each swipe.  Heat embossed in silver.

Used the Splash Watercolouring technique to add green and a little blue to the background of the rubber band embossed piece.  When dry, die-cut the framed fern.  Die-cut a second framed fern in white and then inlaid the design with the splashed background.

Stamped gorgeous grunge several times behind where I wanted my panel to go, as well as stamping the sentiment and then heat embossed everything in silver.  Popped the panel over top to finish.

Hello Palm Tree card:
Wrapped two elastic bands around brayer, loaded with Versamark ink and rolled diagonally over a piece of mixed media paper, re-inking the elastic bands after every swipe.  Repeated with rolling diagonally in the opposite direction.  Poured white embossing powder over top, tapped off excess and heat embossed.

Die-cut palm tree from black card stock.  Cut main panel to size that looked good with the tree die, sponged over top of the white embossed lines randomly with yellow, orange and pink.  Popped the panel over top of the card base and glued the trees on top.  Stamped sentiment in black.

But first, coffee card:
Started with the same background as the Hello Palm Tree card.  Brayered versamark on mixed media paper with rubber bands diagonally in both directions.  Heat embossed in white.

This time used the Splash Watercolour Technique to add the same colours to the background ... yellow, orange and pink.  Once dry, die-cut the coffee cup, sponging around the edges with Soft Suede ink.  Glued to a embossed soft suede card stock background that had been trimmed to size.  Popped the panel up on the card base.  Added a sentiment stamped in soft suede ink.

Wishing You card:

Started by heat embossing my flowers in gold and watercolouring with zigs.  Used only a portion of the image, cutting off the rest to use later.

Die-cut the partial circle from green cardstock.  Wrapped two elastic bands around my brayer, rolled it over a green ink pad (matches card stock) and then lightly rolled over the green card stock  Gives a lovely tone-on-tone design.  Stamped the sentiment in white pigment ink and heat embossed.

Popped the partial circle over top of the card base. Popped the flower up over top of the partial circle.

Colouring with Zigs

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing two cards that are watercoloured using zigs.  Each card is the same stamp images ... both are heat embossed.  The one above is heat embossed in gold.  It's actually the second one I made, but these are my favourite colours so HAD to post it first. :)

I added a layer of orange watercolour and then a layer of pink on top to create lots of variations in the colours.  I only used one colour of green for the stems and leaves.  To finish, I tore a piece of vellum and heat embossed "hello" in gold to match.

The first card I watercoloured is below.  I heat embossed the images in lime green.  I LOVE how it turned out.  I used dark teal to watercolour the flowers and green for the leaves.  When I started this card, I wanted to cut out a shape and pop it up on a white background.  I had seen a lot of heart cards done in February that were filled with flowers and wanted to try that, but didn't want to use a heart.  Instead I used one of the Label dies from Spellbinders.  Once I had it cut out, I didn't like it on the white background, so popped it up over the background with the rest of the images.  Just a little different design for the card.

I'm entering Card #1 at Simon Says Wednesday Challenge - Girl Power.  I love the feminine images and colours with pink.  And entering at Time Out Challenges #104 - Bold.

CASEing Colleen

Hi everyone.  Today I'm CASEing a card made by my sweet friend, Colleen (One Smile Lifts a Spirit).  She posted her card several months ago, but I couldn't get it out of my head. :)

Isn't it gorgeous??!!  I just love the softness of colouring on vellum.  I didn't have the colouring products that Colleen used, so I used zigs to colour onto the back of my white embossed vellum flowers.  Thanks to Aileen for giving me the tip to not use any water when working with vellum!!  Much appreciated, Aileen!

After I fussy-cut my zig'd (is that a new verb??) flowers, they curled up into little tubes.  I used temporary tape to adhere them to my craft mat and then place a weight on top.  It did flatten them a little, but I still needed to add lots of adhesive to get them to lay flat.

I stamped a sentiment first, after figuring out where in to line it up within my thin, stitched frame.  Then I popped up the frame and adhered the flowers on top.  It was fun colouring on vellum and I will do that again.  Thank you so much for the inspiration Colleen!

Take Care

Hi everyone.  More fun playing with Distress Oxides and stenciling.  This is another card with layered stencils.  The CAS Mix Up challenge is open for a few more days. Hope you'll join us if you haven't already.

Three stencils were used on the panel.  Started out by smooshing a background of purple and red.  Then added more red by stenciling through a mini dot stencil.  Next a pretty star and circle shaped stencil was used on opposite corners with more purple.  Last, the bird was sponged through a stencil in dark brown.  I stamped a little bit of script over the bird and heat embossed in liquid platinum to give him a lift ... he was looking rather flat just the one colour. :)

I added a backing panel that was 1/2" longer so I could stamp my sentiment.  This card was sent to a friend's husband who was in a terrible skiing accident.  Wanted to let him know I was thinking of him.  Thankfully his recovery has been going well.

Summer Sunset

Hi everyone.  I'm currently away on vacation over on Galiano Island.  We arrived last night and it started to rain.  It's been raining all day ... so it's too chilly to sit out on the deck, but we are enjoying the beautiful waterviews from inside the house.  It's all about resting and relaxing this week.  Jer and Alex are here for the weekend and we've been eating lots and playing games.  I pulled out my zigs this afternoon to do a little watercolouring and soon was joined by both Jer and Alex.  They had fun playing with the zigs. :)

Today's card is more playing with watercolour washes.  This was an experiment and it didn't turn out as I had planned. :)  I was looking to create a summer sunset with a watercolour flat wash.  I was hoping the colours would blend into each other a little more, but it's still a pretty background, so I'm sharing with you.

I wet my watercolour paper first, and then mixed up my paints with water to create pools of colour to work with.  You need to have the colours mixed ahead so that you don't have to mix more as you go along.  I started at the top with a few strokes of pink, then changed to orange (overlapping a bit with the pink), and finally to yellow (overlapping a bit with the orange).

I added a die-cut silhouette of some trees and leaves overtop so the sunset could peek through.

I'm adding this to the CAS Mix Up September Challenge - Watercolour Wash.  And I'm also adding this to the CAS Watercolour September Challenge - Silhouette.  Silhouettes don't have to be black! :)

Thoughts of you

Hi everyone.  Sharing a card I sent to a friend who recently had surgery.  Thankfully everything went smoothly with the surgery and she is doing great!!

I used gold embossed images from Altenew that my dear friend, Bonnie, sent me ages ago.  I really need to be better about using up gifts!  I watercoloured with my zigs and fussy-cut.  I added a pierced border and a gold embossed sentiment to match.  I arranged the flower spray in the bottom right corner of the pieced rectangle, popping up the large flower for added dimension.

Dare To Get Dirty Event at SCS

Hi everyone.  I'm sharing two cards I made for my friend, Nancy's challenge over at Splitcoaststampers.  This is a yearly event where there is a full week of challenges (around 40 in all), hosted by current and former members of the Dirty Dozen to thank the club members for contributing money to keep this amazing stamping community site running.  You have to be a club member at SCS to play along.  If you are a member, click HERE to see Nancy's challenge.

I've been having so much fun playing with tissue paper, and the fun continues with these two cards.  :)

For the card above, I did the Metallic Tissue Paper technique but I didn't glue the tissue to card stock.  Instead, I scrunched, flattened, swiped with versamark, and heat embossed in gold to create this fun, airy and semi-translucent, torn background for my butterfly.  So happy with how this turned out.

Here's my second card ...

I love the ethereal look of the tissue paper leaves.  It gives a dreamy look to the card. I watercoloured my tissue with two shades of green, glued to acetate when dry, and die-cut my leafy sprigs.

The sprigs are adhered over top of a soft blue mesh stenciling done with my Clarity Brushes.  I used the same colour of ink as the stenciling to colour my sentiment banner, heat embossing in white.  It needed something else and when I looked at my sequins, I couldn't believe I had the exact same colour as the ink. :)  I added two along with a few clear sequins to give the card some sparkle.
