July CAS Mix Up Challenge

Hi everyone.  I'm so excited to be back with the CAS Mix Up Challenge.  This month the Designers are working with the Eclipse technique (sometimes called Hidden Word or Camouflage).  There are a few different ways to do this technique.  I went with the original of using a word die.  Check out the challenge for some helpful videos.

The image (Technique Tuesday) is stamped in Shadow Grey Archival ink and then watercoloured with a mix of Distress Inks and Dye Inks.  Once I finished, I used a hello die to cut out from my image, as well as cutting two extra layers from white card stock.  I layered the word dies together with the watercoloured version on top and popped them back onto my card front.  It turned out really well, although it's not easy to see in the photo.  Next time I'll offset the top layer slightly so it's more visible.

Close-up ... hopefully you can see the "hello" in the middle of the flower. :)

More Cover Die Eclipse for Gof7

Hi everyone.  Another card  for March's Group of Seven technique - Cover Die Eclipse

I've been away from my computer, which is unusual for me.  Sorry I have missed keeping up with visiting blogs, but we are getting ready to move in the next couple of weeks.  I've been busy packing and sorting everything.  We have been in our current house for almost 29 years, so you can imagine that we have acquired a lot of STUFF! :)  Hope to be back visiting your blogs on a regular basis in a few weeks.

For today card, I used a large image (Blooming - Penny Black) which is stamped in black and heat embossed with clear.  I sponged over the background creating an ombre effect with Distress Oxide Inks (Saltwater Taffy, Abandoned Coral, Aged Mahogany).  I used plain water to watercolour the flowers.  The water activates the Distress Oxide inks; then I used my paint brush to remove most of the colour, blotting with a paper towel to make sure it was dry.

I created two panels the same and die-cut one with Laurel Leaves Background Plate (Simon Says Stamp).  I cut two more panels with this cover die from white card stock and then layered all three of the die-cuts together with the stamped / sponged one on top.  I lined up the stacked dies over my second panel and then glue them together.  To finish I added a simple happy birthday (Special Sentiments - Penny Black) sentiment banner.

As you can see from the close-up ... I wasn't very careful when lining up the stack of leaf die-cuts so you can see a bit of the white peeking out from the stack. :)

Cover Die Eclipse - Group of Seven

Hi everyone.  Today is the start of a new technique at Group of Seven.   Julia introduced us to this fabulous technique that is a twist on the Eclipse (or Camoflague) technique.

I had it in my head that I wanted to use a stencil, even though the technique calls for stamping a large image. :)  I made two stenciled card fronts using the lovely Sunflower stencil from Magenta, sponging with Distress Inks (Mustard Seed, Ripe Persimmon, Rusty Hinge, Mowed Lawn).  One was used at the base of the card front, the other was die-cut with a Hello Frame die (AliExpress).  I cut two more of the Hello Frame dies from white card stock and layered them with the stenciled one on top.  The final step was to glue the die-cut stack on top of my card front, lining up the images.  I'm so happy with how this turned out!! :)

Here's what I learned when I experimented with this technique ...

• Even though this is called Cover Die Eclipse, you don't have to use a Cover die.  You can use regular dies, or a mix of a few different dies to create your pattern.
• You can use a stamp or stencil to create your design.  This makes the technique more versatile.
• Patterned paper is also a great alternative to stamping an image.

For the card above, I used a large stamp (Pinecone Background - Simon Says Stamp), inking the image with shades of green and brown Distress Inks and spritzing with water before stamping.  I die-cut my top layer using a frame die (Sizzix - Rachel Bright) that was gifted to me many years ago.  The card is finished with a black stamped sentiment (Big Scripty Greetings Holiday - Simon Says Stamp - retired).

... and one more ...

This time I used patterned paper for this technique.  It worked great!  I used images from a set of papers from AliExpress.  There were two of each design ... one solid and one on vellum.  I used the vellum image for the background, layering a couple of die-cut white layers (I used a honeycomb corner die in the bottom right corner).  Then added the solid image for the top layer, also cut with the honeycomb corner die in the bottom right corner.  The image comes outlined with gold, so I simply added a gold metallic die-cut sentiment (Happy Birthday Friendship Script- Memory Box) to complete the card. :)
