Batik - Group of Seven

Hi everyone.  This month's technique is Batik.  This is a type of artform that uses wax to create a resist before dyeing fabric.  The best way to replicate the art is to start with Emboss Resist and then add folds and sponging.

Group of Seven Cardmakers

For the above card I used a retired stencil from The Crafter's Workshop, sponging the leaves in two shades of green distress inks (Mowed Lawn, Rustic Wilderness).  I pressed my Versamark pad over top of the stencil and then sprinkled with Clear Embossing Powder, heat setting to melt the powder.

I then added a few random creases, both horizontally and vertically.  I used my bone folder to help make the creases sharper, although you will always end up with jagged edges when folding card stock.  I flattened out my card panel as best as I could and then randomly sponged two colours of Distress inks (Mowed Lawn, Salty Ocean) over top of my entire panel.  I took a piece of paper towel to wipe the excess ink that was sitting on top of the embossed stenciling.  

The card was finished with stamping a simple sentiment in more Rustic Wildness ink.

Here's what I learned when I experimented with this technique ...

• Silhouette images are best for this technique
• The creases add to the artistic look of this technique
• Thinner paper worked better for me with folding, but the creases are more subtle.  My friend Susan used very light paper (a heavy printer paper) and instead of folding, she crunched the paper up, flattened it and then sponged over top.  It looks great!!

Another Batik Technique card ...

This time with more of a masculine look.  I stamped the image (Wild Flora - Inkylicious) in Versamark and stamped onto kraft card stock (thinner than my regular card stock used above).  I heat embossed with clear and then repeated the steps above.  A simple sentiment was stamped in black ink and the card was popped up over a black card base.

Another Batik Card

Hi everyone.  Sharing one more card for the August CAS Mix Up Challenge - Emboss Resist.  This card uses the same technique of Faux Batik that I used on my DT cards for the launch of this challenge on Aug. 1st.  And I used the same background image stamp (Plant Background - The Stampin' Place - retired) that I used on my DT cards for the reminder post on Aug. 15.  The difference was sponging distress inks (Mowed Lawn, Salty Ocean) over the white embossed image.

Once I finished sponging, I wiped down my card panel with a paper towel to remove any ink that would have stuck to the embossed image.  This made the colours even brighter.  I added a popped up frame over the panel and stamped Happy Birthday (Endless Birthday Wishes - SU! - retired) in more of the Salty Ocean distress ink.

August CAS Mix Up Challenge - Emboss Resist

Hi everyone.  This month's CAS Mix Up Challenge is all about Emboss Resist.  Nancy is hosting and she has found some wonderful video tutorials of different ways to do this fun and easy technique.  I followed this video.

I started out with a technique that's been around for a long time, but I have never tried - Batik.  Using a kraft card front, I stamped Full Bloom (Penny Black) in Versamark ink randomly in different directions to fill the page, heat embossing in clear as I went along.  The next step is to make several folds in all different directions.  The embossing powder cracks a bit when folding, but that is part of the technique.  It exposes the fold lines down to the card base that are highlighted once colour is sponged on top.  So cool.

I love the look of the exposed lines which create the Batik look (example of Balik artwork below).

I sponged the panel with a mix of distress inks (Peeled Paint, Spiced Marmalade, and Crackling Campfire).  Then cut the panel up to create two cards.  I made the first with a popped up panel on white card base, adding a black banner with die-cut sentiment (Penny Black's Heartfelt).  I made the second on a kraft card base (below).  It was a smaller panel so I added the Full Bloom image stamped in Versamark and heat embossed at the bottom to balance.  The sentiment (Banner Sentiments - Penny Black) is stamped in black ink.
